Eating for body and brain, plus another low-carb plan

Did you know that eating to reduce belly fat can also reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s? That’s the conclusion of the July 14 issue of Woman’s World magazine, which includes five tips that can help you slim down and keep your brain sharp.
Whole wheat and olive oil
This diet isn’t so much about things you should avoid as it is things you should add to your current eating plan, such as whole grains, seafood and olive oil. The magazine reports that switching from white to whole grains can reduce your belly by three inches and increase your IQ by 16 percent.
Adding omega-3 rich seafood twice a week may help women lose up to a pound a week without making other dietary changes, and eating fish weekly cuts your risk of Alzheimer’s by 60 percent.
Women who ate olive oil burned more abdominal fat than other women, and the effect lasted for up to five hours after consumption. Replacing three ounces of cheese or meat in your diet with olive oil could have your risk of Alzheimer’s.
But it isn’t just eating the right foods that’s important. It’s also a good idea to lose weight with a buddy and to get lots of exercise, since walking at least 10 minutes a day cuts your risk of Alzheimer’s by 30 percent.
Eating to “destroy fat cells”
Another article in the same issue highlights The Idiot-Proof Diet. We told you a bit about this British diet plan earlier this summer. Woman’s World says people who follow the diet, which is a reduced-carb plan with unlimited quantities of protein and fat, can lose up to eight pounds a week and a hundred or more pounds long-term.
The plan is designed to burn fat quickly and help people lose a lot of weight at a steady pace. The women behind the diet, Neris Thomas and India Knight, say it’s important to try to lose weight with a buddy, to always have distractions (not food!) close at hand, and to go for a walk, take a quick nap or smell some flowers if you feel like snacking.
