Celebrities and weight: Oprah hits 200, ex-deputy PM backs weight clinic, and secrets of the stars

Oprah hopes to refocus on healthy living in 2009

Oprah Winfrey’s up and down battle with her weight has been in the news for decades, and earlier this year she seemed to be on the right track again when she took part in a vegan detox diet that also eliminated gluten and alcohol.

But now she says she’s up to 200 pounds and, as you can imagine, not too happy about it. She said in the January issue of “O” magazine that she has fallen off the healthy living wagon and is embarrassed that she’s let her weight get so high (Take a look at her diet ups and downs in pictures, courtesy of the Los Angeles Times.

The week of January 5 is slated to be “Best Life Week” on Oprah’s show, and she says she’ll use that time to refocus on being healthy and strong rather than trying to reach a certain number on the scale. She also said she felt like a “fat cow” during a taping of the show with Cher and Tina Turner (but who wouldn’t feel like a slouch next to them?) and that she’s not sure what she’s going to wear to Barak Obama’s inaugural ball because she’s not sure she’ll fit into the dress she’d planned.

John Prescott wants to help men lose weight

John Prescott, the former deputy prime minister in England who has admitted to having an eating disorder says he wants to help his constituents, particularly the men, lose weight.

Two thirds of all middle-aged men in Hull are obese, and Prescott is backing a clinic that aims to help even older guys lose weight. At 70, Prescott weighs 16 and a half stone (that’s 231 pounds) and says that older guys in particular tend to think they’re too old to lose weight and just “let your paunch go.” Here’s hoping he’ll practice what he’s preaching, too.

Health secrets of the stars

People magazine regularly puts together slideshows featuring the healthy habits of celebrities, and a recent one has a few tidbits to offer us.

Ricki Lake, who’s now maintained a weight loss of 140 pounds for more than a decade, says there’s no big secret to her continued success: she eats well and is active. In particular, she eats meals from organic delivery service Fresh Dining.

Sarah Chalke from “Scrubs” says she stays fit in her 30s by varying her exercise routine. Sometimes she’s hiking with her dog, other times it’s a boot camp or yoga class. She says she can’t do anything for too long or she gets bored.

And Patti LaBelle says she stays active by doing workouts in the pool and shaking it on stage to help control her diabetes, while actress Kate Winslet says if all else fails, use body shapers called Scultpz.
