“Biggest Loser: Couples” episode 5: Briging the teams back together
Note: In the author’s area, a basketball game prevented her from watching the first hour of this episode of “The Biggest Loser: Couples.”
This episode of “The Biggest Loser: Couples” saw the teammates of the remaining contestants return to the ranch. While most of the players were happy to have their teams whole again, all were nervous about how much weight their counterparts were able to lose at home.
The challenge resulted in a victory for Mandi and Aubrey, who had the choice of winning either $5,000 or a two-pound advantage in the weigh-in. They went back and forth on the issue, noting that they could do a lot with the money, while Jillian felt they needed to take the weight advantage because at this stage in the game you need all the help you can get.
At the last-chance workout, it appeared as if Joelle was back to her old habits again. Shanon, on the other hand, worked hard as she carried Sione on her back, which Bob had instructed her to do. Shanon cried through the pain, but she managed to get Sione across the gym before they both fell to the floor.
Before the weigh-in began, Mandi and Aubrey chose to use their two-pound advantage.
- Filipe lost three pounds and Sione lost eight pounds, which gave them a combined percentage of 1.73%. Because they won immunity, their weigh-in didn’t count against them.
- Mandi lost six pounds and Aubrey lost 10 pounds, which gave them a combined percentage of 3.9%.
- Carla lost nine pounds and Joelle lost no weight, which gave them a combined percentage of 1.44%.
As if her results were actually a surprise to herself, Joelle commented to the home audience, “Zero! Zero! I lost zero pounds this entire week.”
Even though Bob didn’t actually point his finger at anyone in particular, everyone knew he was referring to Joelle when it said it takes a team effort to make things work.
The weigh-in continued:
- Blaine lost nine pounds and Dane 11 pounds, which gave them a combined percentage of 3.04%.
- Laura lost 13 pounds and Tara lost 12 pounds, which gave them a combined percentage of 4.84%.
- Mike lost nine pounds and Ron lost four pounds, which gave them a combined percentage of 1.83%.
- Both Helen and Shanon lost nine pounds, which gave them a combined percentage of 3.75%.
- Kristin lost 11 pounds and Cathy lost five pounds, which gave them a combined percentage of 2.74%.
The “Biggest Loser” contestants headed back to the house to discuss whether they’d vote to send Carla and Joelle home or Mike and Ron. When Joelle’s competitors asked her if she really wanted to be there, Joelle remained silent, so Carla stepped in and scolded her partner.
She told Joelle she didn’t know what her problem was and then let both Joelle and her competitors know she wanted to be there even if Joelle didn’t. Carla confronted Joelle to the point that Carla was in tears, and Joelle basically stood there and shook her head instead of apologizing to her friend or offering her friend any comfort. But Carla’s competitors let Carla know they knew she wanted to be there and appreciated her passion. Despite the support from her competitors, Carla knew Joelle’s actions might cause everyone to send them both packing.
During the elimination, everyone let it be known they were tired of hearing excuses from Joelle, so they sent the silver team home. Many of them expressed how sorry they were to Carla and knew she worked hard, but because of Joelle’s lack of enthusiasm, they felt it best to send them home.
Since Carla and Joelle left the “Biggest Loser” ranch, they hadn’t spoken to one another for several months. In an attempt to reunite the two friends, “The Biggest Loser” arranged a meeting between Carla and Joelle, but Joelle stormed out of the meeting. However, Carla remained determined to continue her journey to weight loss on her own, and she has lost a total of 87 pounds. As for Joelle, she managed to lose an additional 26 pounds.
