“The Biggest Loser: Couples” episode eight: A twist that leaves a trainer in tears

Contestants headed outdoors for another “pop challenge.” Before they began, Alison told them there was no guarantee they’d be able to keep their trainer or partner. After that shocking news, she went on to explain that the winning team would get to choose its trainer.

Once Alison revealed the shocking twist, one player from each team stood in mud and had to touch a ball that hung above their heads. The first team to touch its ball 100 times won the opportunity to choose its own trainer.

Tara gave it her all to win first place for her team. Although she struggled toward the end, Tara was the first to reach 100, so she and Laura chose to stay with Jillian.

Finishing the challenge and the new teams

The remaining “Biggest Loser” teams continued the challenge. No one wanted last place, but in the end, it came down to Kristin and Helen. Both Kristin and Helen had fallen in the mud again. They hurried to stand back up and touch their ball to avoid finishing last.

The ladies were tied: 99 to 99. Kristin stood up first and touched her ball giving her 100. Because Helen finished in last place, she had to switch trainers. Then the toss of what looked like a cardboard token determined which teams split up and who got a new trainer. After everything was over, the new teams were as follows:

Bob’s team (black):

  • Filipe
  • Sione
  • Mike

Jillian’s team (blue):

  • Tara
  • Laura
  • Helen
  • Mandi
  • Aubrey
  • Dane
  • Ron
  • Kristin
  • Cathy

Bob questions change

Back at the ranch, Jillian and Bob were surprised to learn they had new teams. Jillian seemed to be OK with the change as she led her new team to the gym, but Bob didn’t accept the change so well. In fact, the change brought him to tears and left him wondering if he wanted to continue as a trainer. Like the “Biggest Loser” contestants, he too felt the change was unfair.

“I’ve never been this upset on the show before,” Bob admitted.

Bob eventually collected himself and put his new team through a harsh workout in the gym.

Biking all day and night

After a workout with their new trainers and team, the contestants met up with Alison for their first challenge as a new team. Once they arrived, Alison let them know the challenge was a 24-hour challenge. She went on to explain they’d be riding a bike in the gym for 24 hours, and the team who put in the most miles would get a three-pound advantage at the weigh-in. In addition to the three-pound advantage, members from the winning team also would win their own bicycles.

One member from each team started the challenge off. Then once they tired out, one of their teammates took over. As soon as that person became too exhausted to continue, another member from his or her team took over.

After approximately nine hours, the blue team decided that maybe they should all quit so they’d have enough energy for their last-chance workout. Mandi asked everyone if they wanted to call a truce, but Sione said he wasn’t giving up. Sione’s determination inspired the others to continue as well, so both teams fought the exhaustion and completed the first 24-hour challenge, which led to another “Biggest Loser” history moment.

In the end, Alison rejoined the contestants to count down the last few minutes. After the challenge had ended, Alison announced that the blue team biked 264 miles, and the black team biked 301 miles. Naturally, the black team won, but before everyone left the gym, Alison added that Tara biked 58.8 of the black team’s 301 miles on her own.

To be continued

Because of the president’s speech last night, the second half of “The Biggest Loser: Couples” will air at 8 p.m. Eastern tonight (February 25).
