Kicking back with kombucha

As the dog days of summer grow near, a refreshing beverage choice becomes more and more essential. Many reach for iced tea, soda, or better yet, ice-cold water. A new option has entered the beverage arena, however: GT’s Kombucha.
What’s kombucha, you ask? Kombucha is a cultured combination of microorganisms, produced by a 30-day process in which enzymes, antioxidants, and probiotics are formed. Ultimately, kombucha transforms into a beverage that supports immunity, digestion, and overall health. Clearly, kombucha provides significant health benefits . . . but how does it taste?
Upon first sip, kombucha might startle your taste buds. The culturing process creates an effervescent quality, similar to soda, so be prepared for some fizz upon opening the bottle.
All the 10 flavors of the Synergy line and seven flavors of the organic raw line have the same “vinegar” taste due to the organic acids contained in the kombucha. While it may take a few sips to overcome the unexpected acidity, the flavor becomes increasingly palatable as you continue to drink the kombucha.
The combination of the pseudo-carbonation and the strong flavor ensures that each bottle will last a while, providing continuous refreshment. Unlike a bottle of soda, it’s nearly impossible to gulp kombucha!
Although I have yet to sample every flavor, each one has provided unique enjoyment. Ranging from Strawberry Serenity to Gingerberry, GT’s flavors are both delicious and creative. Divine Grape wins as the favorite!
Unfortunately, while these products are both refreshing and nutritious, they are quite expensive. Whole Foods Markets and health food stores sell each 16 ounce bottle for $3 to $4, making them an only occasional treat. Nonetheless, I recommend them for not only the health benefits but also the distinctive flavor experience.
