Breast Milk Cheese Tastings: The Lady Cheese Shop Opens at the Michael Mut Gallery in NYC

Michael Mut

Edibles made from human breast milk have been in the news a lot lately, and a new exhibit at NYC’s Michael Mut Gallery called The Lady Cheese Shop is the latest to take advantage of this unusual yet sustainable substance. Artist Miriam Simun will invite visitors to taste three different cheeses made from the breast milk of three different women.

Naturally, chef Sarah Hymanson, who created the human breast milk cheese, has paired each variety with wine. Visitors will also be able to check out the original design proposal and see the cheesemaking process, according to Inhabitat.

The Lady Cheese Shop opens on Thursday, April 28 and will run until Sunday, May 1. The exhibit is Miriam Simun’s final project for the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University. Here’s what Simun has to say about her choice to create human breast milk cheese:

Human cheese offers a unique entry into these issues. Humans are the only animals to harvest and consume other species’ milk. This milk is neither created for human digestion, nor particularly healthy for human consumption, nor always kind to the animals we harvest and milk. Cheese is one of the oldest bio-technologies. It was also, in 1990, the first genetically modified food product to be approved for sale by the US Food and Drug Administration.

New Yorkers, will you head out to see The Lady Cheese Shop this weekend?
